I have climbed up Snowdon many times via the Pyg, Miners and Llanberis routes. However at Easter weekend we're attempting the Watkins path to ascend and Crib Goch to descend. Has anyone been on these routes at this time of year? Having never done them I'm aware that they are considered difficult and sometimes dangerous and would be grateful of any tips or advice.

Think about doing it the other way round. Crib Goch is serious at any time of year, it may be impossible / too dangerous in ice / snow.
There is an alternative up/down link with Watkin via the South ridge. This adds a bit of variety but brings you back to same car park. Watkins is a good route in poor weather if you are "relaxed" about not getting all way up, if too icy etc. The last bit is the trickiest, steep & scrambly.

Thanks for the advice. Have just read on BBC news about a rescue on Snowdon - Crikey! I've read on a few websites about Crib Goch being very tricky. I think it'll be one to save for the summer months.....

I'll have a look into the South Ridge descend - thanks.

That Crib Goch is trecherous, its more of a climb than a walk I should know I am a climber - dont call it a path!!!

Hiya Twinkle Toes

In your opinion can walkers do Crib Goch? We've never done it before but are really keen to ascent/descent Snowdon this way. Any advice from a climber would be appreciated!

Thanking you!

Hi Nicola,

Good question. Think you would need to pick your day if you are keen. Give yourself the best chance by allowing plenty of time as the ridge does go in a bit and there are some times you will have to stop and work out the best route to proceed. Also I have only done it in fine weather, It would be really scary with any winds or rain or both.

If you have a good party with experience of scrambling and good communication, you might want to give it a go, I would certainly class it as an adventure. Stack the odds in your favour by getting as many things spot on before you depart, that way if one or two unexpected occurances present themselves you will have the best chance of coming out smiling!

We've decided to ascend Snowdon via Crib Goch. We're hoping to do it on Good Friday or over the easter weekend so fingers crossed for a clear day!

We're also planning to go up on the Glyders in the same weekend so I really hope we get a bit of blue sky!
