I am looking for help to try and trace the history of Hafod and to assist in it,s restoration. It was at one time a 3 storey house and was reduced to 2 stories in about 1600. Recently I got to understand why; the original build was a single storey hall house, with 2 rooms off. One of these was a defensible solar, which resembled a mini Dolwyddelan castle. The hall area was, later, raised to 3 stories, but, in doing so, the builders used a 19 inch internal dividing wall, that failed to carry the weight of 3 stories. If I am right, it means that Hafod must be a prime contender for Llewellyn's llys in Trefriw. Even if I am not it still must be the oldest house in the village and of considerable historical importance. The 3 stoyey structure has been dated, prvisionaly, to the 1500's, by Gwynedd Archaological Trust. Sadly, in the last 150 years it has undergone a series of thoughtless renovations. I am anxious to try and get as much information as possible on the building, to assist in it's restoration. Pictures would be great, but recollections, of Hafod, before the 1980's are just as important, Recollections of those who carried out work on Hafod for Herbbie Walsh, the Robert's or Norman Barker could be invaluable. Please, if you have any information, even if it is as tenuous a possible lead to a name, let me know; as time is running out on those who might be able to help in the restoration of a peculiarly important house.
